If the kitchen is social hub of the home, then the island is it’s gathering place. The island plays many roles. It’s broad expanse of countertop steps away from all the functional features of the kitchen makes it a great prep space. If the kitchen is a workshop then this is it’s workbench.
But the way we live in a kitchen is about much more than its function. It is the convivial place to gather, standing or seated on a stool visiting with the cook and the rest of the folks who have gathered round. This is the other side of the “workbench” and we place islands strategically to maintain this boundary: cooks on one side and everyone else on the other.
In this Island Gallery you will see the many creative expressions of what an island can be, because every island is an opportunity to craft something special. Scroll through to get a taste.
