West Hartford Jewel Box

What started as an exterior color consultation ended up becoming a total transformation of this otherwise modest home. The home is featured in “Inside the Not So Big House” by Sarah Susanka and perfectly embodies its message of quality over quantity of space. A consistent natural material palette of wood, glass, metal, and stone unifies the features of every room. A terraced hall transitions to the previously remote and difficult to access rear yard, transformed to become a pocket garden with bamboo fencing and a bouldered water feature. Our imagination was encouraged and is on full display throughout the house.

“This was a project more about light and atmosphere; a feeling rather than a particular style. They can conceptualize it and have the skill to create it. When they come in with the drawings you’re like, “Wow! They got it!” It’s the first time I’ve had that experience.”
